K-Jetronic Tuning

Every DeLorean was fitted with a 2.8 Litre PRV V6 Engine, fuelled using Bosch's K-Jetronic Continuous Mechanical Fuel Injection. Back in the 1980's, K-Jet was fairly commonplace, however, nowadays it is not seen often. K-Jet relies heavily on precisely metred fuel pressures in order to function at its correctly. If any aspect of the system is out of spec, connected incorrectly or broken, the engine will run poorly, often hunting at idle, hesitating when cold or hot, struggling to start when cold, hot or both. Poor fuel economy is another sign that your engine could benefit from a tune up. If your DeLorean has any running issues, or you'd just like to get it tuned for optimum performance and fuel economy, contact us for more details.

Fuel Hoses

K-Jet runs at high fuel pressures (around 5.5 Bar) which puts a lot of stress on the 40+ year old nylon and rubber fuel hoses. There have been multiple documented cases where fuel hoses have ruptured, causing fuel to leak onto the engine and cause a fire. Once a fire has started from a ruptured fuel hose, it's already too late. Even with the engine switched off the fuel accumulator will continue to spray fuel out onto the engine by means of a spring and diaphragm.

Therefore it is imperitive that your fuel hoses are changed for new braided Stainless ones if they haven't already. Contact us for more details.

Throttle Adjustment

An often overlooked part of the engine is the throttle spool/assembly and air bypass/balance screws. incorrectly adjusted throttles can cause hunting at idle, or restrict the maximum throttle opening - which will decrease the performance significantly. Occasionally the air bypass balance screws are incorrectly adjusted which can cause a lumpy idle, high idle or hunting when cold. If you'd like to have the throttle set up on your DeLorean, be sure to get in touch to arrange a visit!
